Barnaby is the local street juggler who entertains for money outside the walls of Notre Dame. The Prior sees him and tells him that he would best serve God by becoming a monk and not by using his talents. Barnaby, not questioning him, decides to join the order. After a few months, you see that Barnaby has gained weight and looks solemnly. The other monks (who are gifted artists in their own right) argue with each other over whose artistry best serves God. Barnaby, not wanting to be caught in the middle, leaves them and is more depressed than ever. He goes into the chapel and meets the cleaning lady - Anna, who gives him the best advice he hears. He decides to juggle for God and every day he goes to the chapel and performs in secret. The other monks, getting suspicious, decide to find out what he is up to. They spy on him and after witnessing one of his “atrocious performance”, reprimand him and then suddenly, the statue of Jesus comes to life and wipes the forehead of the juggler. “Blessed are the simple-hearted, for they shall see God.”
