The story starts off with a little girl named Anna asking her father to tell her a story. The father tells her the story of a girl named Sarah who wishes it to be Christmas every day. Sarah asks the Christmas fairy and the fairy grants her her wish only for a year and then they will see about having it longer.
Everything is great for a while, but then Sarah starts getting really sick and tired of eating the same things, getting the same presents every single solitary day. And she is not the only one. The people of the town are getting quite upset and is ready to lynch the person who asked for this. The only ones who are happy that this is happening are the Baker, Storekeeper and Bookseller because the money keeps rolling in.
Even the holidays are ruined. Such as Fourth of July when the kids want to use fireworks, they turn into candy. And when the Mayor steps up to read his annual Declaration of Independence, he starts singing 'God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen'.
Finally, when the year is over, Sarah asks the Fairy that Christmas never come again, but the fairy is saddened and tells Sarah that once again she is being very selfish. Sarah bargains with the fairy, asking that it come only every thousand years up until finally she gets to where it comes once a year and the fairy says that that's the way it should be and how it has always been since Christmas first began.
