Our story begins in an everyday opera house and the impresario of this particular opera house has called the four best singers he has for a very special meeting. We meet Nutte-- the voluptuous mezzo, Bielle-- the big-headed tenor, David Stern-- the big shouldered bass, and Signora Canto---the egotistical soprano. As the operetta starts, Nutte, Bielle, and Stern are waiting in the waiting room. Ms. Stanish, the secretary, comes in and tries to keep the three singers comfortable but they keep pressing her because they have know idea why the impresario, Andre, has called this meeting. Bielle even tries to convince her by kissing her, but that doesn't do any good, she would rather "be convinced" if Mr. Stern kissed her, but he refuses. Bielle asks him why, and basically David Stern tells him that he would, if she was a guy. Andre arrives and he wonders where Signora Canto is. The three singers get upset knowing she will be there because she is forever ranting and raving about her so-called career. The prima donna arrives and words exchange between the singers, especially Nutte. Andre tells them that he called the meeting because he received a special invitation from Buckingham Palace, and that they are to perform a special concert for His Royal Highnesses. The only problem is that Buckingham Palace is not paying for their flight over. It would have to come out of the opera company's budget. Andre decides to audition the four to see which one will go. While Andre retreats to his office, Luigi the custodian, and his son Joey arrive and Luigi tells them that he has heard all the greats and the four singers do not even come close to shining their shoes, especially the soprano. Luigi and Joey leave and then Andre starts to audition them one by one. The girls try to seduce Andre during their arias, and the men just want to get through it, especially Stern. After the audition, Andre leaves to get a good stiff drink, and then Luigi and Joey enter to finish cleaning Andre's office. We find that Joey is a prodigy and we hear it when he plays the piano and his father sings a familiar tune that brings him and all who listened to tears. We find that Joey is a mute because of an accident when he was young. Andre walks in after hearing the music and says he wishes he could take Joey along with him to England, and Ms. Stanish says he can. She has been trying to tell Andre that Buckingham Palace called and they are willing to pay for all expenses. Everyone can go. The four singers are happy, Joey gets to play for the Queen, and Andre wants to go take a vacation after this.
